Velpanat combines two drugs into a single tablet - Sofosbuvir (a nucleotide analog NS5B polymerase inhibitor) and Velpatasvir (an NS5A inhibitor). This medicine is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with chronic HCV (hepatitis C virus) genotype 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 infections:
a. Without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis
b. With decompensated cirrhosis for use in combination with ribavirin
The active substances in Velpanat, Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir, act by weakening the activity of proteins needed by hepatitis C. block two proteins essential for the hepatitis C virus to multiply. Sofosbuvir blocks the action of an enzyme called ‘NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase’, while Velpatasvir targets a protein called ‘NS5A’. By blocking these proteins, medicine significantly reduces and stops the production of new copies of the hepatitis C virus.
Take 1 tablet once a day with or without food on a regular dosing schedule. Swallow the tablet whole. Due to the bitter taste, a film-coated tablet can not be chewed or crushed. Treatment with Velpanat Velpatasvir Sofosbuvir should be started and monitored by a physician experienced in the management of patients with HCV infection.
Note: If ribavirin is prescribed, follow the additional dosage instructions for this medication after consulting your doctor.
If you forget to take Velpanat 400mg/100mg
If you miss a dose and it is within 18 hours of the normal time, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Then take the next dose at the regular time. If it is after 18 hours then patients are advised to wait and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take more than 1 tablet of Velpanat in a day.
If you’ve taken more than the recommended amount of this HCV medicine or enough to have a harmful effect on your body’s functions, immediately contact your doctor or poison control. They can give you advice on what you should do before emergency services arrive.
