Neo Mercazole Carbimazole 20 mg Tablets

Indications : Long-term control of hyperthyroidism of Graves’ disease. Preparation of patients with hyperthyroidism for thyroidectomy. Before and after iodine-131 therapy.

Dosage : The usual starting dose is 15 30mg daily for 4 to 6 weeks, reducing at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks to a maintenance dose of 5 10mg daily after approximately 3 months. Serum thyroid hormone and TSH should be measured at each review visit, every 6 8 weeks, and dosage adjusted to maintain euthyroid state. The Maintenance treatment may be required for 12 24 months depending on the individual case being treated. Children may be given an initial dose of 250 micrograms /kg three times daily, adjusted according to response. It is advisable to use carbimazole until the patient is 17-18 years of age.

Precautions and warnings : Liver disorders. Patient should be advised to seek immediate medical attention if mouth ulcers or sore throat, fever, brusing, malaise or non specific illness develop. In such patients full blood count should be performed, and treatment should be discontinued if there is any clinical or laboratory evidence of neutropenia. Creatinine phosphokinase values should be measured if patient experience myalagia. Carbimazole may be given during pregnancy to a hyperthyroid patient, but the smallest effective dose should be used. Patient should be reviewed every 4 weeks during pregnancy and treatment should be discontinued three or four weeks before delivery.

Contraindication: Lactation, Patient with a previous history of hypersensitivity reaction to it. Adverse reaction: Most frequently, nausea, headache, arthalgia, mild gastric distress, skin rashes and pruritis. Urticaria, hair loss. Bone marrow depression, agranulositosis, liver disorder, may develop.

Storage: Carbimazole tablets should be stored at a cool place. They are stable with a shelf life of 2 years. Keep the bottle tightly closed. Full prescribing information available on request.
