You must have heard yourself or a friend cribbing over headache. More often, swallowing a pill is the solution. But, are aware about the type of headache you have? Yes, there are many types that can trigger your headache. They are more complicated than you think and they come with different symptoms and affects in an individual’s body. 

Types of Headache

According to researches, there are more than 100 types of headaches, the most common amongst them are:

1. Hypertension: You must have said this at least once in your life, “I am tensed for my exams” or you must have been tensed for some emotional reasons in your life. This type of headache causes mild pain and goes over time. Adults and teens are victim of this type more often. Do not panic, you are doing just fine.

2. Cluster: These are rare but more severe, so to speak. Cluster headache gives a burning sensation behind or around your eye. The pain worsens over time and people with cluster headache finds themselves pacing up and down every time it triggers them. This attack can vary from a 15 minute period to 3 hours and disturbs the sleep and other activities.

These are called cluster headaches because they come in groups and can attack a person more than 3 times a day. They can last from 2 weeks to 3 months and affect men 3 times more than women.

3. Migraine: Migraine is an intense state of headache. The pain in this type of headache is throbbing and it lasts for about 4 hours to 3 days. There are likely chances to have this headache 4-5 times a month. This does not only give pain, people become sensitive to light, noise and smell sometimes. Children suffering from migraine often soothe themselves in darkness. Along with that, loss of appetite is a major symptom that couples with stomach ache.

Children often start to develop blurry vision, nausea, fever, vomiting and paleness in body.

4. Hormone Headache: Hormone imbalance causes many changes in human body. Women are more prone to this type of headache. Pregnant women, menstruating women and women who are going through menopause can cause hormonal headache. Certain pills like birth control pills may also affect the headache in certain women.

5. Sinus Headache: This headache does not limit itself to your head or brain. It moves in cheekbones, forehead and nose. This is caused due to inflammation of sinuses in the head. 

There are other symptoms than just a headache, you may face runny nose, fever, irritation in ears and the face also gets swelled up. 

This is caused mainly due to sinus infection; the nasal discharge in this is green or yellow.

What causes Headaches?

Headaches that you experience are caused due to number of reasons.

1. Illness: Some serious injury in past may cause headache. It happens because of infection, fever, cold etc. Sinus infection is caused due to some health illness. A blow to head may increase the chances of headache.

2. Stress: Stress/depression is the major causes of headaches. Emotional imbalance in personal or professional life of an individual has a long lasting effect on headaches. 

Insomnia leads to headaches because the body and mind do not get sufficient rest to function with the same level of energy required. Sleep patterns, stress on eyes and medication also impact the headache.

3. Environment: The environment we live in can have many effects on our bodies. For example, a pregnant woman becomes sensitive to certain kind of food or smell. 

If you are surrounded by smoke zones, or exposed to chemicals, they can cause headaches. Change in weather also has adverse effects on our bodies, a sudden cold may cause severe headache sometimes.

4. Family history: Headaches like migraine tend to occur more if one or both parents have suffered from this. 

Treatment of Headache

Headache can be treated in multiple ways. People usually tend to take OTC painkiller drugs for their headaches, but as it gets more severe, consulting your doctor is the best way.

The doctors may advice different types of treatment depending upon the type and severity of your headache.

In many cases, medical treatment is not necessary, but doctors do recommend MRIs, CT scan to understand the type of your headache. 

The best way is to fix an appointment with your doctor; they will examine your situation and treat you accordingly.
